These photos are selected from the book “General, Commander in Chief Vo Nguyen Giap”, which was published by the Ministry of Information and Communications this year to celebrate the General’s 100th birthday.
General Vo Nguyen Giap was born in a teacher’s family on the bank of Kien Giang
River in Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province in central Vietnam. He joined

The first articles written by Vo Nguyen Giap, with pen name Hai Thanh, on
Tieng Dan (People’s Voice) Newspaper in 1929.
In 1930, at the age of 19, Vo Nguyen Giap was arrested and detained at the Thua Phu Prison in Hue city.
After taking the law degree, he became a teacher.
On December 22, 1944, the Armed Propaganda Brigade for the Liberation of Vietnam
was established, with 34 soldiers, led by Vo Nguyen Giap.
On August 26, 1945, Commander-in-chief Vo Nguyen Giap passed the troop in review for the first time in Hanoi.
On September 2, 1946, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam celebrated its
1st anniversary. General Vo Nguyen Giap read the order of the day of the Army Party Committee.
In 1948, at the age of 37, Vo Nguyen Giap was brevetted as High-ranking General
and became the first High-ranking General of the Vietnam People’s Army.
General Vo Nguyen Giap worked at the Viet Bac military base in 1949.
President Ho Chi Minh and General, Commander-in-chief Vo Nguyen Giap at

The Politburo decided to carry out the General Attack to Liberate South Vietnam from December
1974 to January 1975. General Vo Nguyen Giap was a member of the General Staff of the general attack.
The Military Commission of the Central Party Committee kept track of the Ho Chi Minh Campaign 1975.
On March 10, 1977, General Vo Nguyen Giap led a military delegation to the USSR at the
invitation of Marshal Dmitry Ustinov.
The General and hero Pham Tuan visited the Gagarin training centre in the USSR in July 1980.
General Vo Nguyen Giap talked with President Fidel Castro during his visit to Cuba.
The General received former US Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, in 1995.
In 2006, during his visit to Vietnam, Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez presented General
Giap a copy of the precious sword of hero Simon Bolivar.
The General paid a visit to Dien Bien Phu battlefield in 2004.
The General took a siesta during his visit to Cu Chi Tunnel, HCM City.
He met with the Vietnamese Heroic Mother Vo Thi Hoi, 96, in Cu Chi.
He attended the 20th anniversary of the Liberation of South Vietnam in 1995.
